Yes, she can, but she closes her eyes tightly whenever I handle her. It takes a very long time for her to realise nothing was attacking her and she can come out. When I let her out of the tank and watch from the distance, though, she can move very fast and hide somewhere.
This is Mango. She hates coming out of her shell, unless it's for bloodworms. I tried to put several of my baby guppies into the tank hoping Mango would chase them, but it turned out the guppies keep poking around at Mango and not the other way round.
I'm not 100% sure about the brand of the lamp but it is a both UVB and heat lamp. Her eyes are fine, although she is sleeping a lot. I put her in shallow water with a few guppies yesterday, hoping she might be interested, but nope, none of the guppies disappeared. She eats bloodworms, though.
I don't have any pics on my laptop right now, but Mango is always having 'stunted growth' problems. She is only around 4 cm now and she is 1 year old. I use a UV lamp for around 10 hours daily. Yesterday afternoon I turned the lamp off and let the turtles sunbathe next to the window, as it was...
Hello, I have a red eared slider, Mango. She recently recovered from a mild case of shell rot. However, she almost never eats. Sliders are known for their practically bottomless stomachs—my other one, Chocolate, can eat a whole vegetable leaf by herself. Have any of you experienced a turtle or...
I agree! I was super mad to see the headline on the news being ‘Sulcata Tortoises abandoned’. By the way, I’d like to see pictures of your Sulcatas! How old are they?
Actually, abandoning animals is against the law, but hardly anyone enforces it. Public parks with ponds have become ‘turtle abandoning spaces’. A welfare organization’s volunteers even went up a mountain to rescue a 10-year-old Sulcata over 35 kg.
The animal shelters are very experienced with a ton of space for the tortoises, and some animal welfare organizations will adopt them, but yes, it is difficult for these abandoned tortoises to find new homes because of their size and the area limitations.
Exactly. Also, in HK most people live in small apartments, which means they have no space at all for these giant tortoises. I know 2 friends who live in houses but sadly they both have cats, which obviously cannot get along with tortoises
A ton of these sellers really don't care about the animals. I once bought 2 baby red-eared sliders because they have shell rot, and not only did the seller ignore their sickness but they also put them(along with at least 20 other small sliders) in a tiny, cramped glass tank which is not the...
Hi,
I am trying to spread the news of many, many Sulcata/African Spurred Tortoises being abandoned here in HK. Most people just buy a baby, be interested on Day 1, then ignore it as soon as they lose interest. Sulcatas can be bought in pet stores for around HK$2000-$3000, and people don't care...
Of course! I'm very happy I found this forum, even though I am not a tortoise owner. I learned a ton of things I never knew about tortoises here, as well as a bit of information about turtles, too.
