    Scute flaking

Unfortunately, our weather has gone full winter. Highs today were in the 30s F with a wind chill of 21. I’ll have to work on trimming them until spring!

    Scute flaking

I appreciate the information! I’ve always thought his front nails seemed long but was told when I got him that they were fine. I will trim them up! Would the nail grinder I use for my dogs’ nails work? Also, his shell always seems very dry despite almost daily soaks. Ideas?

    Scute flaking

Thank you for the information! I will start treating it today. I had wondered if you could mix the anti fungal cream and antibiotic cream. I have chlorohexidine i keep on hand for my dogs, too. I have had to trim his beak several times even though he eats off of a river rock or from his...

    Scute flaking

Hi everyone! Happy Thanksgiving! I was getting my Russian tort, Ziggy, ready for his soak and noticed one of his back scutes seems to be coming off? Is this normal or an injury? I’m not sure how he would have injured it. The only thing different is that he has been digging under a log in...

    Warming up enclosure ideas

I wonder if something like this would work to help keep heat in? The sides of his enclosure are wooden now and I don’t want to block natural light completely.

It did have better natural light instead of LEDs. Come to think of it, I did add plastic panels to the top last winter, which probably kept the heat in better despite the sides of the last 1/3 of the habitat being open wire (it was made for putting on the ground).

He gets UV outside right now, but I’ve already got an Arcadia T5 12% ready for when the daytime temps become too low for outside. Table near large windows and have strip LED lights . His basking area is 95 F, area around it low 80s. Until this week, farther ends of table were in the 70s. Now...

    Warming up enclosure ideas

Hi! My Russian tort, Ziggy, does not use his large enclosure (4 x 8 feet) much. He has been in it since approximately January of last year, transitioned up from a commercial tortoise table. At first, I thought it was because of the activity level in my classroom where the large table was. I...

    Ground squirrels ex-closure

I had a similarly driven mixed breed. Her prey of choice was moles. Within six months time, she had eliminated them from our yard. We saw mole hills in the neighbor’s yards but not within the area she patrolled. Good doggy! We had a similar fight with groundhogs as Tom did with gophers two...

I am just now more comfortable taking care of Ziggy! But he’s a great little guy! I will be saved from getting too many because I have to leave enough room for my dogs! Lol

Ziggy has been enjoying his outside area! I need to put more fun stuff back in; I just cleaned it out and trimmed the grass.

Thanks! I actually have enough supplies extra that I’m thinking of applying to adopt her! As a relative tort newbie, I wanted to make sure I could care for her.

I am in love with my Russian tortoise, Ziggy, that I got from a rescue group in NC last fall. While talking to a friend yesterday, I mentioned the rescue when she asked about Zig. I went to their page out of curiosity and noticed this little girl and the accompanying description. Is she a...
