Love to hear that about the personality. We have two young children and are unable to have pets like a cat or dog due to allergies. I'm sure they'd prefer a turtle with a bit more cordial personality.

In your opinion, what species requires the smallest outdoor space? I know Russians stay pretty small but do walk long distances in the wild. What about a small hermans, etc?
And what species would do well outdoors year round here in New Orleans?
Yes, we do have the humidity for it for sure (New Orleans is the most humid city in the US).
