I replant wild dandelions and plantain plants from my yard in the boxie space. Twigs and leaves are good cover too. I just throw a pile of dried grass and hay on a corner and he loves it.
Maybe try to divide his space up so you use 1/4 or so as a pond. A storage container that he can get in and out of that will allow him to full submerge if he wants to would be a good option. They do deserve a good amount of space, but right now you want that space to work best for him until you...
My eastern is a hiding machine. They love being under cover. This is a setup that he really enjoys: a big container full of water with a cover over part of it. He will just sit around in the water for days.
Think more pond like, not water dish. That made a huge difference for how my guy...
Just curious if it’s ok for tortoises to eat the little hairs. There are no large spines on the variety I have found, but those little hairs sure irritate me. Is it an issue for the tort?

The Mader book covers a lot of anatomy, physiology, and medical issues (how to diagnose, suggested treatments, etc) for many species. I haven’t read it cover to cover (it’s a big resource book) but it’s a fun one to leaf through when curiosity strikes.
