Just curious how long is Rocket? You mentioned he is a baby, and I know they grow at different rates, but he looks a lot like my lil guy who will be 2 years this summer.
What kind of heater? I never used one so maybe another person can weigh in.
I followed the directions from here with great success and didn't use a heater.
From the site:
"...I place the lid on the rubbermaid containers that house our baby tortoises. This helps to mimic the dark, humid...
The enclosure looks to be a fine size for a baby.
My Hermann's was a similar size when he first came to me. He slept maybe 23 hours a day or more for a long time. He would wake up around noon, or I would wake him up to soak and feed him daily.
Re:water It wasn't until he was almost a year...
I would also thoroughly check the heat and humidity too. My Lil guy gets flippy if they aren't ideal. I screwed up once when the hydrometer said the moisture was 60 percent but it turned out the substrate was actually soaked and the hydrometer was broke. So while the air temp was perfect the...
I sometimes put the stem of a leaf in the water tray, with the bulk of the leaf on the slate. That keeps it from drying up quickly and actually brings back limp greens.
I second this. You will know for sure when it flowers which should happen soon. Had oodles of mock strawberry in my yard in PA. Never gave it to my tort. Tortoise table says sparingly and has this line which is bonkers imo: However, as the leaves age and start to wilt or decay, they produce a...
I did... You wrote: "...you are only being gone for 2 days? Leave him home in the dark and he will sleep almost the whole time you are gone. For some reason I thought you were gonna be gone a week."
Did I misinterpret that somehow?
Hi all,
My little guy (who is my first tortoise) has a bit of plastron that seems to overlap like a finger nail. (Right side near middle) I soak him every day. I saw someone on YouTube give their tort a scrub with a toothbrush. Wondering if I should do that to make sure that area, including the...
Mind blown. Is this a common thing? We can just leave the lights off and they will be less active for those days? My lil guy has flipped a few times so I worry. Guessing this might be less stressful than me relocating his whole enclosure to a friend's house?
Thanks!
This forum will help a lot. I was very spazzy at the start and it helped calm my nerves and teach me best practices .
The best thing for me to remember was babies sleep and hide often. In the begining my lil guy would bury himself for what seemed like 23 hours a day!
One of the ways I monitor...
Thanks, Matt! It sounds like you hit the nail on the head. I probably would have stubbornly gone through a few more fails before I would have figured this out, if I ever did! I will change thing up accordingly. ?
