Yep my Russian is the same way almost always poops everywhere when picked up unless I put him in something like the small tub I soak him in before moving him
We all make mistakes I made the mistake of ordering my Russian tortoise from backwater reptiles he showed up with shell rot and I had to get him back to being healthy nows he's doing great
I also prepaid for a dalmatian for this summer with him he normally responds once he's ready to ship it out to you won't be till it isn't so hot out for the tortoise health/safety
Don't put them back them tortoises ain't native to the US so most likely someone ditched their pets
So if you're not going to keep them bring them to a reptile rescue center if you have one around your state
