raised bed with dovetail joints. Previous raised bed I made using pallet collars was not good in that R injured himself on hinges twice, and was so fixated on the hinges he never relaxed

no longer using an outdoor pen made from pallet collars and I would not recommend using them. Rialto got injured twice, getting his nails caught in the hinges, and even when not ripping out his nails, his endless obsession with the hinges seemed to wear him out. I have R now in outdoor raised...

    DIY Dishes

there are glazed plant saucers that dont absorb water, but it presents a slick surface which could be unsafe for tortoise trying to get out of it. I've seen lots of soap dishes that are made from some sort of plastic or resin that have a nice texture

    Domestic Air Travel 2025

Haven't seen any discussion about this more recent than 2019. I need to take Hermann tortoise on from east coast to a midwest state next month. Plan on taking Delta. According to Delta website, I need to go to skyclub counter at airport and pay a $95 fee in order to take a pet on board with me...

    Outdoor enclosure questions

I created a similar outdoor pen for my Herman so he could get real sunlight during the day, but I always took him inside at night. A camera I had in pen with motion detect showed a rat entering the pen in the early morning hours- so not a place I'd want to leave tortoise overnight.

Would adding coco coir increase humidity in my closed chamber enclosure?

Coco coir doesn't hold moisture anywhere near as well as cypress mulch. Maybe add some spagnum moss

    Skin color changes?

color change is normal. Looking at photos of my Herman from 8 years ago you can see how his skin, which started out looking like white leather, has gotten darker and spotted. His shell that use to look almost yellow is now a pure tan (brown) color. I think being in an outside pen under real...

Nail ripped out? What can I do?

He doesn't seem to be in pain, which seems odd if the quick is exposed as it seems to be. No bleeding

Nail ripped out? What can I do?

Just took my Dalmation tortoise inside from his outdoor pen and noticed one of his nail is nearly gone. Instead there is a black stump - like the outer part of the nail got ripped off and the black quick stump has been left behind. Do you think that's what happened? I pick this tortoise up...

    Eco earth substrate

I would not use 100% coco coir (Eco Earth) as it dries out very quickly and often presents an unnatural almost fluffy surface I can't imagine tortoises are happy walking through. I got some coco coir in my indoor tortoise pen, but I mixed in some organic topsoil and put a thin layer of cypress...
