I've noticed this too with my baby. When I pick him (or her?) up, he looks down below him, like he's wondering where the ground went. Once I get him picked up, though, I'll let him sit in the palm of my hand, and he doesn't seem to mind that.

Does this mean we only need to spray their shells? Max hates it when I spray his skin, but his shell he could handle.

So why does everybody say to spray them with water daily? If soaking them is just to get them to drink water, what does the spraying do? I'm confused!

I don't think tortoises ever eat those pellets from Petco, so don't worry about that one. My tortoise wouldn't touch them, and my friend's tortoise (who is my tortoise's sister) wouldn't either. Even at Petco there's always a full bowl of them just sitting there in the Russian tortoises'...

The bag said it's crushed English walnuts... it was at a pet store, and they even put bags of it under the enclosure they keep their Russian tortoises in. But I've been noticing mentions in this forum how how bad sand is, so I've been confused. It was expensive too! We poured 6 bags in there...

My husband and I got our Russian tortoise about a month ago, and we are absolutely in love with him. He's two years old, and his name is Maximus (Max for short). He's our first pet... the last time I had a pet was when I had pet mice at age 11! We are both allergic to cats and dogs and...

My Russian tortoise does make one sound... a sneeze! At least I think that's what it is. He hates his baths too. He walks through his water bowls all the time, but he never drinks any.
