All of those foods mentioned should only be given rarely. They are not good foods for redfoots. Give them cactus pads, squash, spring mix like leafy greens, mustard greens, collard greens, dandelion greens, pumpkin, bell pepper, sweet potato, any type of cactus, mango, pineapple, hibiscus...
I cannot support a group that is ok with tortoises being bought on a whim. Tortoises living in glass tanks and people not doing any research and members posting false information. Sulcata shouldn’t even be sold. I would bet 98% of them die the first year.
You are right about the prepared foods. There are some that are strictly vegetarian. But fresh foods are much better. And be careful not to get one with animal product in it. Sulcatas have always enjoyed fruit in their natural diet (5%). Who decided they couldn’t have it? It’s always been...
I have studied and has tortoises for 30 years. Fruit is acceptable as a treat in their diet. Your care sheets may need to be updated. They will, of course, run into fruit in their natural habitat and will definitely eat it.
Your sulcata needs hay and grades. Dandelion, clover, kale, arugala, mustard greens. 5 to 10% off their diet can be fruit. Sulcata do not hibernate. Box turtles can but it is risking their life if you don’t get it right.
most pets are now overfed and don't get enough exercise. reptiles included. put her on a really high quality diet, the right humidity and temps and make sure she gets time to crawl all over the yard. eventually she should lose some of that weight.
that's not true. russian tortoises and many other types can live perfectly fine with others of their same species. russians are fine living with several in the same area, so long as it is large enough. we had an outdoor enclosure that was at least 12 x 20 feet. had 6 or 8 in there. they...
it does take them a while to get over the stress of being moved into a new home. that being said, please do not keep them in a tank. even for a baby, an aquarium is not large enough. they will also get very stressed and start to pace if they can see out. handle as little as possible for a...
