Thanks for the quick response. I’d appreciate your input... from what I’ve read it’s high fiber low protein... grainy/wet urates are becoming popular even with low protein and soaking... which the last owner never mentioned (prob half the problem)
He’s about 30-40 lbs. I’m trying to find a good way to measure his growth besides the normal back of shell to gular measurement, as it prob takes long and cant really track progress. And he poops like 2-3 lbs a day. Should I weigh him everyday before he poops? Or perhaps after?
His enclosure...
Again... I read many threads on urates, and the right consistency, the amount, frequency, and not clear on this.
Can someone tell us the basics...
How often should we see the urates?? and is produced because of too much protein or dehydration?
The consistency should be similar to toothpaste...
I’m in South FL...
I have only had my Tort about a month, the previous owner gave me an igloo type dog shelter for him.. (as I read many comments about).
I noticed he has slightly burrowed, at least removed most of the grass and is mostly on dirt...
Does this mean he is looking for for...
This is the kind of info I’m looking for...
I live in SW Florida... I’m not sure why he started burrowing. It’s not hot at all, around 75 F and he started burrowing in the corner...
Tonight is 65 F and he has not burrowed. In fact he has moved the cage over a bit more towards a grassy bottom...
Haven’t noticed in the last 2 weeks but it seems like a few layers of his scute are drying out..
Soaking 2-3 times a week. If no soak then at least a spray down with hose or mister.
The top of his head seems to be slightly peeling, I assume it’s due to growth.
Thanks for the info! Glad I haven’t enough time to dive into it head first...
I like the site just not sure what tortoise they refer to when they mention if it’s acceptable.. (or I haven’t looked in enough detail). Do they mention it?
My tort prob has long nails bc he’s never been on concrete... and on this soft grass his long nails probably only help.
No thoughts about taking to vet for a clipping??? ♂️
He eats from the the floor too but what I have noticed is that I have to pile the food up for him to get it... it like his gulars are constantly in the way.
I put his food either uphill or downhill hill so it’s easier for him... Sometimes hand feed him for fun :)
To make it quick and simple...
I am pretty exhausted about reading about what can/can’t should be fed to Sulcatas...
I have read... (not quoting sources) that Kale is good for them regularly and I have read that it should be fed occasional/rarely... who am I to believe??? Both sources seem...
