Hello, folks.
So yesterday I found this wasp in our house.
I believe it is a bald-faced hornet.
It appeared to be lethargic, so I let it go outside.
Today I found it dead on our patio. It appeared to be crushed, and I suppose someone stepped on it.
It was still moving its legs slowly, but...
I've never fed my red-eared slider hornwort.
I've heard that red-eared sliders don't eat hornwort, but I have a hard time believing that there's anything that red-eared sliders don't eat! 😆
Even if they don't eat it, I would imagine that they would destroy it anyway, because they are red-eared...
For adult aquatic species (such as red-eared sliders), shallow water can be more dangerous than deep water.
The danger is that they can drown if they end up upside down and are unable to take a breath.
Aquatic turtles can right themselves somewhat easily compared to other species of turtles...
Here's the great Buford predicting an early spring on Groundhog Day, 2025.
We wanted to know what Buford's prediction would be, so we gave him a piece of cucumber. If he ate his treat out in the open and did not run away and hide, we would have an early spring. If he ran away, we would have...
How cold will she be without a heater?
Heating the water to tropical temperatures while the air temperature dips can cause stress to a turtle's respiratory system.
Adult red-eared sliders can tolerate temperatures below their optimal range (75-80° Fahrenheit) for extended periods by entering a...
I am not asking if Teresa is suffering severe long-term dehydration. I simply stated that I hoped that she did not suffer severe pain from the dehydration I put her through because I felt terrible. 😢
But she does not appear to be suffering any long-term ill effects. She is alert, begging for...
I am not offended. I am still stressed because I put Teresa in a dangerous situation. 😥
This was a short-term setup (1 month) to test how well she could handle the hibernation temperatures. For long-term hibernation, she would hibernate underwater.
The three-season room temperature is not...
I have a decent understanding of what turtles need to hibernate, and this is not something that she has not done before.
I did not begin hibernating her in October because I had to be sure that she was well fed before depriving her of food.
I am also aware that they need moisture to hibernate...
Hello, folks.
So, it's winter, and we're currently in the process of preparing our red-eared slider, Teresa, for winter hibernation (brumation).
She is currently being housed in a small storage bin filled with water (without a water heater or a heat lamp) at around 68°F.
This is only a...
I'm aware that it's a little late to be posting for Christmas, but I had to post these pictures of the old guinea pig getting his last Christmas present.
Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
While I have dedicated this page primarily to the one and only Mr. B, the greatest guinea pig of all, and while no guinea pig is worthy to be compared to the furry gourd named Mr. B, the most infamous guinea pig that no one has heard of, I have the made the most controversial decision to allow...
Thanks for the tip!
I do not think that the container is big enough for a floating nesting area.
But I appreciate the idea with the sand and soil in the container. I have heard that turtles are more likely to nest in sunny locations, so the heat mat was a good suggestion.
Hello, folks!
So the temperatures are dropping, and the snow is beginning to fall where we live.
Our red-eared slider, Teresa, has already been taken safely inside.
This is the time of year when I would be preparing our red-eared slider for brumation by feeding her in her temporary storage...
