I have been going back and forth with this decision, and I have honestly been avoiding facing it, but the truth is that my tortoise deserves better. I have had my tortoise for 14 years. He was given to me when he was five years old, and now he is a 10-inch Russian tortoise. Every time I think about this, I start bawling my eyes out because he has been with me for so many years. I know I need to do this for him and think beyond my own feelings.
Life has become extremely busy, and I have not been able to care for him the way he deserves and needs. I’ve built him 2 homes and I still don’t think he is getting quality care. I can barely remember to bathe him as often as he needs to and living in Chicago does not make things easier. My biggest concern is him ending up somewhere where he will not be okay, which is why I am writing on Reddit to see if maybe there is someone out there who truly has a passion for Russian tortoises and can give him a loving home.
I have been hesitant to go to a local rescue organization because I am scared I will never know what ends up happening to him. my biggest want is to rehome him to someone who would be willing to send me periodic pictures and updates. I will also be willing to drive him to a new home within the US.
While I was doing my research, I typed on Google my fears about all of this and a Reddit post popped up about someone going through something similar. I started reading the comments and saw a comment from someone that was willing to take the persons tortoise. Then I went to the page and saw that this person had an oasis for Russian tortoises and it just gives me hope that someone out there has something similar to offer my baby.
