Oh god this is just as good too. I've saved the video and blog in my favourites. I could not for the life of me get a hold of his head so I'll try the file right now
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! (saves me a fortune on vet cost)
Sorry for the late response, but that tutortial was incredibly helpful. Every little detail was there. I have ordered some cuticle trimmers. As of yet my tortoises beak is not that over grown, but I figure I should deal with it now before it gets to be too long.
As I wait for the cuticle...
Thanks for the input. I'm a bit apprehensive about holding his head for the reason of finding the too loose/too tight grip.
One idea I had his I could wrap my fingers with sandpaper. If I feed him by hand (I do this rarely) I let him eat all the way to my fingers but I hold the food in a way...
Hi everyone
So I have read that people who wish to trim their tortoises beak should have a vet do it. Unfortunately, there was one vet in my area that was a herpetologist (and in my opinion, not a very good one). He moved to the US leaving me without a vet unless I can find a way to another...
Darn.
Make sure your kids have good friends. Easier said than done, but seriously hanging out with dimwits will have a profound negative effect on your child.
I'm not sure if this only works on a few people, but my parents made sure to never really be content with what I did. This may...
Yea I figured out what happened. I made a corner in his enclosure with only coco coir for him to burrow and play in and it was walled by stone. one of those stones was next to his hide. He climbed onto the stone and used it as a foot hold to climb onto his hide, then he moved a piece of wood i...
Thanks :D
As mentioned I don't have an antibiotic ointment, but would isopropanol work if i clean it every morning?
Would his enclosure be an issue as well since it is a mix of sand and coco coir and the sand could potentially get into the cut.
Thanks again everyone.
Hi gang
So my tortoise made a break for it by climbing out of his enclosure (i still cant figure out how). In either case I found him in another room having a good time, but his head had one of its...scutes (i know they're not called that in this case). It semi tore off and when looking...
my guy got used to the outdoors when the weather got better. One day though the temperature dropped and he had to stay indoors and he just went insane. Went to hell and back to climb out of his enclosure and he got close. I snagged some sweet pictures of him doing some pullups.
I'm pretty new at this myself, but I have set the oven at 400F and left the soil in a bakingpan (see pic below) for about 30 min. Or until almost all the moisture is gone from the soil, but then I figure everything has died. Then i pour water onto it to get it all moist.
p.s. it is a nightmare...
thank you so much.
I noticed it looked like he was swallowing or moving his beak whenever he made the sound. so i'm glad you mentioned the beak thing.
Thanks again
Hello everyone
My tortoise generally never makes a sound other than the common 'hiss' from when he pulls his head in. However, he has for awhile (1-2 months?) been making a very short squeak noise. Like a really loud swallowing noise that sounds a tiny bit like donald duck

I've been reading a bit about the repti-glo 10.0 and apparently they cause eye damage due to UVC light. Even on the packaging it shows that the light includes wavelength all the to 200 nm, which means there is UVC being emitted.
I'm curious as to which specific brands or types of lights are doing this. I'm not very familiar with the jargon myself. However, my russian tortoise enclosure has this bulb producing UVB light:

Thanks for the advice everyone. Unfortunately the only vet I know was pretty awful, which is unfortunate since my city is home to a massive veterinary college.
I was able to easily remove the sliver of wood using tweezers without causing any damage. When i first got mango he had that chip (he...
Here are some images. It's a bit tough to see, but it's there.
As mentioned, it's really small. just curious as to why it isn't healing.
Thanks gang!
p.s. you can see the little bit of wood chip that got in. should i attempt to use tweezers to get it out?
p.s.s. i got the wood chip out.
