Guess I have realized that I am just shopping in the wrong venue...I see now that some of the larger pet stores carry larger bags of Reptile Bark so I am going to go buy a couple of the big bags of that for his box, that way I will know it is safe for him. Thanks for hearing me out...
Coming...
Thanks, since we need a bigger quantity for a 4 x 4 box, I have been looking for cypress mulch at our landscaping stores, and none of them seem to carry that specific type of wood....instead they list things like "choice or select" mixed brown wood mulch so that is a mixture of wood products so...
Hi everyone, thanks to advice from many of you, Sheldon (young adult male Sulcata about 30 pounds) is now using a nice outdoors hide box we built him. Are soft wood chips (such as pine or cedar) ok for the bottom of the hide box, or do torts eat those? We need some dense substrate on the...
Thx for reply John. I was hoping for a picture from the inside showing how the strips were attached. I will check with that company for the strip curtain All of your pictures (and Tom's) have been so helpful.
We have just finished a smaller summer night box for our tort based on those plans...
John, could you provide a picture and more details about the clear poly vinyl door flaps that you used, and how you attached them? What exactly is the material, and does your tort have any reluctance pushing in and out through those?
Also, is it ok if hay gets on the Kane mat? Not a fire...
Very helpful, great idea!!!! Thx for the photo too. That does not look so bad to clean daily. It is good to know your tort drinks from the terra cotta dish. That is what I have been using but had concluded that maybe it was giving a bad flavor to the water or otherwise offending him somehow...
Thanks, I am many hundreds of dollars poorer now :), but have ordered all the equipment above and waiting for arrival. Hide box almost done (we were able to return RubberMaid hut).
Question - are people using covers for their Kane mats or just allowing tort to lay directly on surface...
Tom, aren't your torts huge? How do you manage to lift and soak them? I am already finding it hard to lift our tort in and out of the large utility sink that we are using to soak him in, and he has nearly outgrown that sink so I was looking for some alternatives to use in his outdoor...
Thanks Yvonne, and yes since receiving the tort we have been learning about their not hibernating. There is a lot of conflicting info out there on that topic. The previous owners had been instructed at pet store to put him in a closet every winter until spring, so there is much much...
Hi Tom, I had just sent you a long list of questions this morning and then found Johnkoch's post for the box for a tortoise just the size of Sheldon, with dimensions and all so, I "think" most of my questions have been addressed by this! For a non-handy person this looks a bit intimidating to...
Hi Tom, my reply is really delayed but I wanted to thank you for spending so much time providing the info in your reply. I really appreciate it.
MORE HIDE BOX QUESTIONS: Can I ask for more detail about why Rubbermade options have not worked for you in the past and why you went to the wooden...
Thanks so much to all of you for taking the time to reply! The wooden box definitely looks better...I had seen other posts on modifying Rubbermaid type boxes with insulation and not being handy in a workshop, thought we could manage that. We will try making a box following Tom's box outline...
Hello All, I just posted another thread about our grown Sulcata tortoise developing diarrhea after gorging on rich spring grass. I am starting a seperate thread to ask for advice about housing for the same tortoise. We adopted Sheldon in the fall and he lived in our laundry room for the winter...
Hello All, thanks for having this forum, I read it often as we are new to this. We inherited a grown Sulcata tortoise from a grand-nephew who lost interest. We have a home in Colorado with cold winters, not ideal for the tortoise. The good thing is that our place has a good fenced yard with a...
