Welp, heating and Bert update.
Bert was more brave/active today. He explored his spaceship a bit, and he doesn't freeze up every time I stick my hand in there anymore. He also took a few munches on the cuttlebone! So exciting! I tried dusting dinner with calcium tonight but made a mess of it...
Lol! Tonight he gave me a big poop in the bath instead of on the paper towel. He just stopped fighting to get out and just chilled there in the water. I was worried until I saw his little tail come out and i was like "oh.. yep. here we go!" It was a sizeable one too. I'm kind of surprised it...
It's so nice. And honestly, I'm surprised at how BIG they can be. He had to stand up on his hind legs to stretch and get all the poop out--that was pretty funny to me.
My house is between 71-72 degrees and I can't imagine just letting the lights keep the thing near 82. Just by itself it would sit at 68-70 because it's damp. My tote is larger, but it's not THAT big. I was going to downsize, but since I had the insulation I thought it may be worth trying it out...
I've read that a little over 80 is ideal for the warmest spot in there. :) And in between attempts 2 and Spaceship I put the longer lid on, so the only open spaces was just the CHE and UVB bulb, and even with it 98% enclosed the temps wouldn't stay consistent. Maybe it's just my house?
Any...
I got my first cherryhead last wednesday! And his name is Bert!
Here are some cute pictures :D
However, Bert's set up has been a huge challenge. This was attempt #1
The temperature was only getting to 80 max directly under the light, and while the humidity would stay past 80% the...
I bought a cherryhead hatchling from TortStork and recieved him today! I would have done his (really cool) instaHatch deal, but I was too nervous to hatch my own egg. Next time (and of course there will be a next time lol) I am definitely going to hatch an egg with him.
The baby is absolutely...
This was so informational!
Darwin is looking so great. <3
I had a question. What percentage UVB light are you using for him? I've been told so many different things!
I'll let you know what I end up with! :) Thank you! I think I'm going to try out the reptile prime. I can't be the first person to think about using it for torts.
I was thinking of layering the substrate with topsoil, reptile prime/coco coir, and then put orchid bark on the top. From everything I'm reading, orchid bark seems to be great. It has more upsides and less downsides than cypress.
Did you watch the video? I've never used coco coir before, so I don't know if it's legit or not. Maybe as someone who uses the zoomed stuff could tell if it's legit.
I'll admit, Brian Barcyk runs a youtube channel that I enjoy, and if the product is genuinely good then I'd like to support him. :)
Also a newbie!
Also a newbie! And wondering the same thing!
What is the best kinds of substrates (other than potting soil) to use in the enclosure to keep the tortoises hydrated? And I know it says 70% in that giant block of text there, but that's hard to conceptualize.
Also, how often do...
Thank you for your advice! Also, I must be missing something, because I can't seem where to buy from https://www.gardenstatetortoise.com/ which I'm given to understand is Chris? The website just appears to be informational!
