Thank you so much! I'm okay to home him for now in the short term, reaching out early before absolutely necessary. I most need to find a suitable caring owner with an outdoor space who can give him the care he needs, do you know anyone you could possibly connect me to who is searching? If not...
With a heavy heart, unfortunately and though I never expected my current situation, I'm searching for a home for my three year old eastern hermann, Kepler, approximately full grown and 5ish inches long in the shell. He has been well cared for, calcium and UVB/sunlight, varied diet of weeds and...
Thank you! Sorry for the question earlier, I couldn't find anything discussing hermann brumation in detail by searching, maybe using the wrong keywords
Hello! I'm hoping to double check my plan and research with people familiar with brumation of eastern hermanns and similar.
My eastern hermann tortoise Kepler is around a year and four months old, approximately 4.8-5 inches long in the shell, and 462 grams (giving heavier Jackson ratio of...
Hello, I haven't seen this asked previously and ginseng isn't listed on tortoise table or elsewhere, are the leaves tortoise safe? I have several around. They're ginseng ficus retusa.
Eastern Hermann tortoise in question:
Oh apologies, in terms of the weather outside it gets to around 50 currently, but indoors it remains the same as measured there at around 60-65 at night lows. Humidity in the room is around 40-60%, as measured by another meter that's going to be used for a hognose snake :)
That is a bit low...
I didn't brumate him, I figured he was too young and was nervous I'd kill him, this being my first tortoise. I've seen around should wait until they're a couple years old? He did get a little chubby in the winter with a fat butt poking out a tiny bit more than usual in between his tail and legs...
Thank you so much! I think it's the height of the bulb, that makes sense, I'll readjust. I maintain ambient heat with a CHE, but that incident spotlight so to speak from the light/heat bulb I think might be a lil intense. When is adequate growth that he would be safe in an open enclosure, close...
Hello! It's Kepler's birthday today so I measured him, but looking around it seems like he's massive compared to other people's eastern hermann tortoises, and quite developed in the tail. Is this normal size/weight? He matches a 4 year old tortoise better it seems, but I've observed him...
To give some idea and perspective of why people are saying they have metabolic bone disease, the top image is a healthy sulcata. The bottom one is similar to yours with spikey scutes and a bent-in shell, caused primarily by not having UVB (if looking for which to get, the most reliable is a T5...
Hello, my eastern hermann tort is probably still a little young, but I heard you can sex them sometimes at above 4 inches long, and the tort is a bit longer than that measuring straight horizontally down the shell. Casually curious, as the tort was I believe temperature sexed at a higher chance...
Just wanted to say thank you all for giving me advice in the beginning and seeing all the advice given in the past, I'm so glad I found you when I did. I thought I had everything together, but there probably would have been pyramiding due to ambient humidity issues, and he has a nice varied...
Lovely torts! I love seeing all the pattern variation there can be. Mine is an eastern hermanns from TortStork.
Kepler as a hatchling and around 6 months :) He now uses his original bath dish as a water bowl, grew from 1.25 inches to around 3.5 inches long haha
May be female, we'll have to...
For anyone who finds this in the future, it turned out to be a juvenile shedding stage! The previous scales had been stained heavily by using one brand of coco coir over another, and they were coming off in a normal shed growth spurt to reveal unstained scales below. There was no redness or...
