What does it mean to have an extra scute?

Hi Tom, Following upon your explanation, could missing scutes also be caused by higher temps? Asking since my tort has one of the central scutes missing. Thanks

    Kiwi the Sulcata

When I give her a bath, sometimes I give her a scrub with a soft dish sponge, and that does the trick! And for the legs, you can gently use a toothbrush. Also some substrates tend to dirty them more than others. E.g. at first, fir bark tends to leave a brownish residue on them that the cypress...

Could you add some more pictures, e.g. sides, back, top etc. ? At first glance, I'd say he looks healthy, with little sign of pyramiding.

My new baby sulcata had white circles should I Be worried ?

My tort had the same exact white circles - on the scutes mostly and a few on the plastron - when it was 2-3 weeks old. FYI, the will grow larger until they fade away - it's part of the growth! My tort is now 4+ months old and all the white circles have gone away! So nothing to worry about!

    Kiwi the Sulcata

Hi everyone, Opening this thread for years to come to keep track of the growth of my little sulcata Kiwi! I got her from Arizona Tortoise Compound. It hatched around Jan. 10 2022, and I received it on Jan. 27 2022, so it's approx. 3 months old! It's missing a scute along the central ones, so...

    Newbie here!

I was looking at your set-up again: once the lamps and substrate are adjusted to what is recommended, you can use normal tape and kitchen aluminium foil to cover most of the enclosure tops. It is a simple fix but quite effective if done properly. Aluminium is cheap and reflects heat well, so...

    Newbie here!

Hi and welcome to the forum! Yes it is a Sulcata, the picture is quite zoomed in, but I could say between 3-6 months old(?). Overall, you can find all the answers for food on @Tom post here: https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/for-those-who-have-a-young-sulcata.76744/ And about the best raising...

    Update on my sulcata

Kiwi is just shy of 3 months old, measures about 2.9/3 inch in length. In the past months I had built myself a PVC- based closed enclosure which worked well at keeping temp and humidity but was not ideal to open / clean etc. Two days ago we decided to change to a proper terrarium, in this case...

Baby Sulcata white irregular dots on scute and plastron

Hi everyone, Last update for now, on the closed enclosure that I recently built - what an effort.. The dimensions are 4ft L 2ft W and 2ft H. Substrate is 100% cypress munch and added some fake plants + stones for fun and shades. Added the digital thermometer + hygrometer (left corner), which...

Baby Sulcata white irregular dots on scute and plastron

Hi everyone, Thanks for all your replies! My small hygrometer broke very recently, so was thinking to buy a digital thermometer + hygrometer to leave inside the closed enclosure. Any recommended ones? There are plenty good ones on Amazon but some reviews suggest the humidity is often...

Baby Sulcata white irregular dots on scute and plastron

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. Yes Andrew informed me before purchase that the tortoise was mis-scute. I actually chose to get one mis-scute. The spots are very light but can be seen on the scute. I tried a gentle brushing with a toothbrush but didn't change much. I added red circles where the...

Baby Sulcata white irregular dots on scute and plastron

Hi everyone, I recently acquired a Jan. 2022 Sulcata hatchling from Arizona Tortoise Compound. She's (gender unknown but it's a she for us), very active, eats abundantly. Recently I noticed some whitish dots on her scute and plastron, but given the multiple reasons for them, I'd rather show you...
