Tonka's new play pen - child sand box set up

What a fantastic idea- functional AND attractive! The sand box is just the right shape too- no corners, but it's still a rectangle so it doesn't take up as much room as a round box would. It looks like it is made fairly durable too.

    bats! i love them!

Is that in Australia? I remember reading an article a few years ago about baby bats that were orphaned in severe weather, and were being raised by rescuers. I have a fondness for bats, i think that they are adorable!

    bugs in enclosure

Wolf spiders tend to be quite defensive, they try to run away first but they will bite. They're not harmful, and i doubt that they could pierce a tort's skin, lol, but if i had to choose a spider to have running loose around me i'd choose jumping spiders. They're harmless and fascinating, and...

New with a rescued, sick RF

Lala, how is your little one coming along? I went through a similar situation when i rescued a young redfoot over a year ago. Mine had a respiratory infection, and his eyes were so bad he kept them closed most of the time. I took him to two local vets with reptile experience- one had me using...

    Is canned fruit safe?

Flash is a redfoot tort, about 15 months in age...from what i've read, these guys eat fruit on a regular basis. I usually give him some about twice a week, alternated with veggies and leafy greens.

    Is canned fruit safe?

We would probably all agree that nothing compares to FRESH ingredients, even (or especially?) when it comes to our torts. I am wondering, though, if it would be safe to feed them canned fruits or vegetables? I am in serious need of a trip to the grocery store, and this morning found myself...

    Very STRANGE turtle!

Thank you for the compliments! It's funny to think that many of you probably have tortoises that are BIGGER than him!

    Flash the RF (pics!)

I took Flash out today to get some sun- this year we seem to have skipped right through fall, and there haven't been many decent sunny days lately. So out we went, to take advantage of the weather. I used the opportunity to get a couple of pictures. I added the last one to see if Flash is old...

    Enclosure cleaning

Aside from the usual maintenance (picking up feces, changing out substrate, etc), what are the do's and don'ts of enclosure cleaning? My redfoot is kept in a large glass vivarium, which tends to get unsightly water droplets dried to the inside of the glass between mistings. I clean this...

    New to this, advise?

I have read that oftentimes an aquarium setup does not work, due to lack of ventilation (causing substrate to mold) or injury from trying to escape through the glass. Flash, however, is still young and sick. He eats well, but spends the majority of him time resting in one of his hides. I...

    New to this, advise?

Two months ago i adopted a young redfoot- his previous owner only had him for a couple of months, but decided that she didn't have the time and money to care for him properly. I think she meant well, but when i first saw him it was obvious that he needed some help; he was kept on terrarium...
