ADOPTING A TORTOISE OUT? DONT FORGET

    # Rue, I abhor talking on the phone... But I have 2 torts & would love to eventually have a tort rescue in Florida... I think at the end of the day you wouldn't give your dog to the first stranger who says they will take it just cause they offer. Honestly are their people who part with pets...

    Shell abrasions

@Yvonne G after following your instructions on Thursday, yesterday I noticed 2 more similar spots. The outer shell splintered off to reveal what I now (after much research) assume to be Shell Rot. These spots appear to be older than the 3 days I've had him. Since I put him in an enclosure my...

    Shell abrasions

@ Yvonne G Thank you! Now where do I find those? As for old or new, I don't know, I would think older. It kids looks like dry wood that has been hit with something and splintered... If I had to guess I'd say it looks older but unhealed?

    Shell abrasions

So I've just adopted a RT. Apart from him being a him he came with no history. As best I can tell he is a mature male, but really gender is not so much a point of interest as much as his flaking skin & an odd patch on the front bottom center of his shell. Thoughts on appropriate care? Please...

    Wanted! The unwanted

Is your tortoise too big? Is your hatchling defective? Are you moving somewhere that will not let you keep tortoises? Do you have too many tortoises? I want your tortoise. I live on 10 acres of agrarian (animal safe) land in Central Florida. I'll do pick ups in Florida, provide for your...

    Do you love your tortoise?

I suppose that in a world where people "love" everyone & everything from their life mate to a slice of pizza it's hard to qualify what "love" is. I believe it is a choice, evidenced by action (or inaction), having nothing to do with the object of affection as much as the one loving. So then, it...

    Eyeless Red footed tort

@tctpa523, from what I understand she was hatched by tortoiseyard.com and within a few weeks of hatching was sent to a woman who was the tortoise ICU of sorts. She nursed Dottie through the fragile stages. Said lovely lady has since become ill and so I have taken up the cause. That being said I...

    Eyeless Red footed tort

@mike taylor thank you. I think she's wonderful. As for age I can only work with the information I'm given. Was told she hatched in 3/2013. By my math that means she should just be turning 3, however it is totally possible I was misinformed.

    Eyeless Red footed tort

@allegraf we are working on it. She has been hand fed her whole life. We shall see if she can master eating enough on her own... Slowly, because as my tortoise friendly vet told me, "Nothing happens fast with a tortoise."

    Eyeless Red footed tort

@tctpa523 l are dopted her, and for the record I am more than willing to nurse any deformed hatchlings. From what I understand she was hatched by the tortoise yard. When I adopted her she had only ever been hand fed. As she is 3 years old she and I are going to see if she is willing to learn to...

    Eyeless Red footed tort

I live on 10 acres of forest zoned agriculture. There are no pesticides or herbicides sprayed given the large number of animals in the area. Eventually I'd love to take in tortoises of all kinds as a rescue/sanctuary as there is not one that I know of in Florida which seems silly given the near...

    Eyeless Red footed tort

I find it fascinating that I can put her down in her enclosure and afew clicks later she heads straight for her hide (regardless of where I put her or the hide).

    Eyeless Red footed tort

I have found that outside she munches on the plant life but I hand feed her protein & I believe she is about 3. I adopted her recently & absolutely adore her. I'd like to introduce her to other redfoots, but was told they scare her. Since nothing about tortoises is fast I'm thinking its best to...

    Eyeless Red footed tort

I have adopted a tortoise who hatched without eyes. She's sweet, curious, and a delight to have. I have noticed that she makes a clicking noise. I was wondering if that's normal of red foots or if she is just mastered the art of sonar all on her own
