IT was a bladder stone. It will take a long time for the shell to grow back but eventually it will. It's been three months and he's better than ever. Totally different tortoise! And we used the part of a dental machine that you use to cut through teeth when they are fused to the bone. Basically...
Let me clarify I brought home injectibles for two nights and then the rest oral. So hopefully I can get him to eat something with the meds in them. If not a trip to work will be made. Before I post a bunch of these photos, are there any rules regarding the gruesomeness of surgery photos? I...
He still has some stones in his intensitines but he passed a few of them. We didn't want to do a double surgery because the recovery would be ridiculously painful. Today antibiotics and pain meds are extremely difficult to get into him. I only brought enough injectibles home for two nights. It's...
We actually did a boat load of research, consulted with many specialists and performed the surgery at our clinic (we do many odd ball/off the wall surgeries). We've done many cystotomies, this was just our first tortoise cystotomy. My heart was pounding the whole time to be honest. The surgery...
Thank you all for your input- I really appreciate it! Just very worried. Frustrating when you work at a vet but not for this species! Would you recommend I take away his cypress mulch to monitor urination in the meantime (I have him inside for winter)? Otherwise, I will keep you updated if I...
@Meganolvt are you aware of a price range? Or how I can find a qualified veterinarian? I live in PA and don't mind traveling. Most "exotic veterinarians" I find don't do surgeries like this. They mainly do rabbit spay and neuters or mass removals.
Well, if it is a stone, you'll see me back shortly asking for vet recommendations because I don't have ANY in surrounding states. I also do not know surgery quotes and well, when I adopted him 6 months ago I wasnt expecting to spend throusands of dollars off the bat so I'm a little flustered at...
We might have a new answer and the center "circle" may be a very large bladder stone :-/ won't get a real answer until Monday at the earliest. Any other opinions are greatly appreciated!
Well we took an X-ray 2 weeks ago and nothing has changed other than they jostled around slightly. His behavior hasn't changed. Still eating and pooping normally. Waiting to hear back from surrounding vets. The thing next to his stone is his stomach.
I worry he actually gets too hot with his lamp alone. But I guess if he has room to move away he's fine, right? And Ive been looking at what kind of heating mats to order so thank you for the input!
Really? I guess I understand, I'm just surprised because Izzy literally prefers to snuggle into my dogs fur and sleep there rather than his heat lamp but I will definitely change things up. And I live in Pennsylvania in an area where it can get to -20 with wind chill and sometimes up to 3 feet...
One more question: if they do go outside in the winter (and have heated enclosure), do they just slow down entirely and stay in the enclosure and not need excercise at all? Because I can't imagine them wanting to go out in 20 degree weather. I've also yet to see mine burrow yet in 6 months and...
I agree, but unfortunately his area outside hit some bumps in the road and it wasn't finished in time. I'm a cleanly person and he enjoys his cuddle time with my dogs so I don't think a little roaming and socializing here and there is too bad for him. But I will keep in mind to watch out for...
No I am not sure of his age entirely but we are positive he is over the age of 10. He lived with a 50 year old female for 6 years as well. Is there a reason for not roaming the house? I was told they should get a lot of exercise.
