Hi,

Just wanted to pass on this info to some of our fellow turtle and tortoise keepers in the Bay Area in California. The Silicon Valley turtle and Tortoise Club which is a branch of the CTTC now has a yahoo groups. If you are interested in being included, please go to the following link - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SVCTTC

Also, We have been the last couple months putting out an informal newsletter to members and non members via email. If you would like to be included on the clubs mailing list, please email me at [email protected] with the header "Newsletter" and I will add you to the list. Nothing fancy, just a PDF file, but has some interesting current events locally.

The SVTTC has monthly meetings once a month, typically the first monday of the month but in the summer we will be having some activities on the weekends. Stay tuned.

Also, as a member of the SVTTC or CTTC, you are eligible for adoptions of many of the turtles and tortoises that come through our program. You still must pass the pre-screening process. Just by being a member doesnt guarantee an adoption.

Also, we are looking for guest speakers for all of our meetings. If you have something you would like to present and do a 1 hour or 1-1/2 hour presentation , such as a species presentation or "how to" , we would love to talk to you. This month's meeting, we have a specialist of the Leatherback Sea Turtles coming to talk.

I am getting a lot of people who are excited about Gus the Galopagos. Gus is one big boy. Yvonne will be posting something on here as well. We just got permission to post a post on the celebration of Gus's B-day party.

When you get there, you will see (2) Galopagos tortoises, (4) Aldabras and several Sulcatas with one lonely Leopard Tortoises. Also going the same day is the San Jose Reptile Show so you can come to town and get the best of both events.

This is what the SVTTC newsletter says about Gus's birthday:

SVTTC members Terry and Nadia Burtz of Campbell have invited everyone over to their house to celebrate one of their Galapagos tortoise's birthdays. Gus will be 25 years old. He only weighs about 400+ pounds. The date will be August 8th and times will be established as we get closer. Come join them for some BBQ and refreshments. They have many tortoises, which include Galapagos, Aldabra, Sulcata and a leopard tortoise looking for a girlfirend.

Here's what Terry ( Gus's keeper) had to say when I asked if I could post about Gus's birthday party:

Nadia and I have no problem with posting it on the website. It will be a drop-in event from 11 AM to 4 PM on Aug 8 to celebrate Gus's 24th hatchday.

For an "ice-breaker", everyone will be asked to tell a tortoise or turtle story (how they found, lost, or maybe something their turtle or tortoise did).

For a game, we will guess the weight of the big guys. For this, I will make a triangular support that is supported by 3 bathroom scales and 4 people at the event will together pick up a big tortoise and set it on the triangular support. The person that guesses the weight closest will be the winner.

We will have chips, dips, soda, beer, wine, hot dogs, and hamburgers.

Bring your camera and a stalk of celery (celery has a nice long handle for feeding)

Terry

So if you plan to be in the Bay Area of California on August 8th, or live there, and think you would like to have some tortoise fun, mark it down on your calendar. Either "Mongo" or I will keep you informed as plans progress.
