Hi I am brand new and very excited to be a part of your forum. Seems like alot of great advice is shared here! If you are willing, I have two fairly simple questions for you...

First : I have a 7 month old Sulcata that is thriving and doing great! However I feel (and it may be all in my head and he not care at all lol) that he is a bit lonely and have been seriously considering getting him a companion. Someone has one locally for sale that is about 2 months old. Should I look into this?

Second : I call the poor tyke a he all of the time...but how.old before I know the sex for sure? Lol lots

thank you in advance!!!

Oh! "His" name is Ziggy :)

Hello and welcome:)

Tortoises lead largely solitary lives in the wild, They roam large distances and only meet up to mate before moving on. they don't get lonely and they don't need company. Try not to project human emotion on to your pet.

In any case, any newcomer must be kept entirely separately from yours for a good 6 months in quarantine. So you must have 2 complete setups available to do this. After the quarantine period, they may get on... and they may not. You have to be prepared to keep them separately indefinitely.

As for sexing... there's no way of telling without expensive invasive procedures until they are 5 or more years old... with sulcatas, I believe it's nearer 10.

Hi rachamelia:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

Your tortoise isn't lonely. He's fine all by himself. This way he doesn't have to compete for food or for the best hiding place, etc. and he's just fine with that.
