In the time since this thread was first started a Dire Wolf cross has been created. While it has been touted as a resurrection of a species, there are A LOT OF QUESTIONS.

There wasn't enough DNA to create an actual clone of a Dire Wolf, so it was "filled in" with a currently viable wolf. There isn't a good way to predict what of the original will manifest and what of the host will, in many cases. Dire wolves are double or triple the size of current wolves. How powerful will this re-creation be? Is it Carnivorous (like cats are) or Omnivorous (like current canines)? What currently exists to fill this need? Is there a micro nutrient or symbiotic organism, that we don't know about, which is necessary for a Dire Wolf to survive? Can it reproduce? Like our tortoises it may need, probably does need, large tracts of land to run on. Did the Dire Wolf brain or the contemporary brain manifest - just how vicious will this large predator be? So many more questions. Not the least of which is - what do we do with it now?

There is also a re-creation of Aurochs in Germany. There was talk of turning it/them loose in the forests that had been their traditional region/territory. I lost track of how that discussion culminated, but what could possibly go wrong with turning loose huge and non-domesticated cattle into an area that humans and other animals frequent. It would be the equivalent of a European Rhinoceros.

The part of me interested in the possibility of "bringing back" species is very interested in this - BUT...

It isn't Disney. There aren't sparkles and cuteness and good intentions. Just because we CAN, doesn't mean we SHOULD.

The cloning wasn't of a dire wolf. There's 0% dire wolf dna in the cloned animals. They cloned grey wolves and altered the genes to "match" that of a dire wolf.

This thread is evidence of extinction take-back.

Isn't the science wonderful today? Have we done anything to improve the man and his intrusive thoughts though? Without that, I feel that the science is morally unregulated and will end up detrimental to the human condition.

If you don't beat the baby seals then you will have no need to rescue the species in the future!
If you don't harpoon all the whales then you will have no need to rescue the species in the future!
If you don't trap all the beavers then you will have no need to rescue the species in the future!

All 3 of these I knew when I was 8 years old yet all the grownup's kings horses and all the kings men, right?

This is the evidence of Free Will

How about "If you didn't beat that animal you still would be able to 'eat' your hamburger not drink it."
