Regarding the turtles mating in the water: Look carefully at the turtle on the left - notice her hind leg still retracted close to her body (under the bend in his leg). The male on the right has his leg fully extended into the space between her carapace and plastron. Trust me, after a half-century of keeping box turtles, I've seen the mating act about a thousand times!
