    Brumation's Over

Do you brumate outside? My Russian will be two years old this summer. I'm wondering if I should brumate him next winter? I've seen folks use a refrigerator, but that seems so weird to me. I would think outdoors would be more normal & I'd rather do that, but I guess a fridge maintains a...

Agamemnon -- Does he look ok?

Thank you so much for looking and for taking the time to reply! He didn't use to have those kind of speckly darker spots in the light colored areas, so I was worried that might be abnormal. They're not soft or anything, but this is my first & only (for now!! :) ) tortoise, so I thought I'd ask.

Agamemnon -- Does he look ok?

Hi, everyone, Could you take a look and tell me if Aggie looks ok? I'm especially wondering about the bump on each back leg. Since it's bilateral, I'm hoping it's normal, but I've never noticed the bumps before. Are there any signs of shell rot? (I forgot to take a photo of his plastron, but...

    Russian tortoise hamster wheel?

Does he seem to actually like the wheel? I've wondered if they just get on the wheel and can't figure out how to get off. Could just be that I can see mine getting stuck on one. He doesn't seem particularly bright.

When is safe to let him into the garden ?

Tom, should a Russian be a certain size or age before they can spend the day outside? By "secure," do you mean that he can't climb out of or dig under & out of? And some sort of top so a bird or opossum or other creature doesn't take him? Thank you for all the advice you share here!

    What is this?

RosemaryDW, Thank you for all your posts helping us identify our random plants! Your tortoises must be the luckiest tortoises around when it comes to food! I wish I could just look at the weedlike things growing all around my yard and know that my tortoise could have them! He'd feel like he...

    Keep it Simple

They may have wrecked things, but I bet they had a ton of fun doing it! They're probably wondering when you're going to fix things up and beautify it again!

still not eating after a month

I started chopping up my Russian's food much finer than I had been and he started eating voraciously. A few weeks back, someone here suggested cutting the weeds, leaves, ... into pieces about the size of his head and, sure enough, since then he's been eating a lot. I'm new, so I really don't...

    weed rant

It's hard to maintain a lawn. Once weeds establish a toehold, it is hard to eradicate them. So, I can understand your dad's predicament. Could you ask him if you could have a certain area of the yard to grow your "garden" (that sounds a little better than "weeds.":)

    Lost eastern box turtle

I would out notices on your neighborhood apps, talk to your neighbors on the whole block, and maybe post notices with a photo, asking people to look out for him. There's a sulcata in my neighborhood that seems to go for a wander every couple of years. Now, people know it belongs to someone and...

What Weeds are easy to grow for my Russian tortoise and how do I grow them?

I planted two large pots outdoors. Those are doing the best. I planted seeds in three or four 2.5 inch plastic pots in the enclosure. Aggie ate the tender tops off as soon as two to four little leaves appeared. Now there's just long, grasslike things growing. Aggie likes to stomp through the...

    Russian specific enclosure?

My little Russian didn't do well until I got him into a closed enclosure. I think LittleRedFootBRH posted links to ideas for such enclosures above.
