I would fence off a little area if you can, it will stain if wet, alot of people tend to over water and keep it to wet, all the golf courses here reseed with rye (approx. 120 or so ) and the staining doesnt seem to be an issue, of course most golfer are over 5 years old.
I live in the cal. desert where the burmuda goes domant, and I over plant with rye,( last week end), and scoutt loves it. I leave the dryed burmuda about 3 in high so he has green grass and dry grass underneath.
I have a 50# sulcata who has dug about a 10 ft. long burrow and I dare any cat to try anything, he is very protective of his home, I think I would be burying a cat if it tryed to get him.

I know what you you are saying, I have lived in Indio for 20 years and have never had a line break even outdoor plastic fausets, I dont think it gets that cold in town, I am unsure what I am going to do this winter, may block the borrow off and provide an above ground shelter, he probably wont...
Actually I dont live far from you, I am in Indio ca. It got pretty cold this winter 19 degrees one night which is very unusual, we get about 2 in of rain a year, I put the A frame over the hole to keep the water out, in fact my sprinkler water doent even go in, I do hose the inside of the borrow...
The first 4 or 5 ft, of the enclosure I can get to in secs. No way of it colapsing it has t least 6 ft. of top soil here, he is probably going to spend the winter in there to, ave winter temp. here is 50 night 70-75 day..
This is the home of scoutt, 8 year old salcata, the hole is 10 ft. long and 6ft. deep, he has quit digging for now , really hot here 105-118 daytime temp. 80-90 nighttime temp.
