I approach my tortoise very slowly, always from the front, so she could hear/see me first. You can also try placing food in your hand in the morning, and let your tort willingly crawl on instead of being picked up. Overtime they will get familiar with you.
One mistake I made as a beginner was...
My Redfoot baby tort gets hand fed often, though she eats with or without my help. I mainly use food to lure her out of hide for soaks.
Personally I think it’s a good way for the tort to build human-tolerance:) Although I am fairly new to tort keeping. Curious to hear opinions of experienced...
Thanks Tammy! I will keep a close look and reduce chance of that. As of today she is climbing less and spending a lot of time in her hide - being spooked by all the new plants ^^
Hi there fellow RF keeper! I am a new member that also live in beautiful PR. I am wondering if you know a good tortoise vet? Planning a first check up for my 7 months old Redfoot.
Muchísimas gracias!
Great I ll check out the humidifier!
Vet- since my tort has been healthy with good looking poop, we haven’t had to visit a vet. Honestly I trust experienced members here at TFO more. If I learned anything from keeping aquatic turtles it’s that almost over anything is worse than under (feeding...

Humidifier - I was...
Thanks Jan! Oh wow here I thought maybe they’d mellow out with age…
This is my 1st tort so I set up 2 cameras and always spy on her. One curious thing I noticed is that my torts bowl movement often happens where she flipped, while struggling to right itself. Does Houdini do that?
Thanks for the suggestion! Hopefully once more plants are added she will settle down a bit. I had added flat rocks in differ areas to give her more traction - after seeing her belly up struggling for 35mins once (from the camera, not standing by with my arms folded 🤣 ).
Will keep working on...
Thank you Yvvone for the suggestion! did a quick research on TFO, went out and bought a few suitable plants. Will detox / repot them then the tort will be happier :)
Hi guys!
My Redfoot baby Dingleberry has a slight shell deformation from since I got her (see pic). She (assigned to be female for now) eats, poops, and acts all healthily.
I bought her 3 months ago at a small pet store. Soon after I found TFO. After extensive research and realizing the care...
