    First tortoises/yellow-footed tortoises in captivity

@2turtletom thank you for the link! Awhile back while looking through old cumulative trade reports from CITES I came across a paper by Dr. Teresa Telecky, however it was from >15 years ago. She sent me a link to the database, and I have been going over it recently. Very good data on there...

@zovick thank you for all of your input! I am currently looking into trying to find Peter Taylor’s contact information. So far the most recent thing I can find with his name attached was a talk he gave in New York on entomology in 2018. There are a surprising amount of Peter Taylor’s. Even a...

@zovick thank you for such a thorough response. It is greatly appreciated! I read over the Tortoise Magazine where the 1967 photo was featured and a brief history of sulcatas in the U.S. was mentioned. Thank you for expanding upon this history. I live near Pasadena and frequently go to the...

Red foot, Yellow foot, Cherry head Shared Genetics?

Recent genetic work by Farias et al. (2007) as well as Vargas-Ramirez et al. (2010) have sampled from a specific locale (in the former) and across the range (in the latter). Through PCR sampling of the cytochrome b gene (a mitochondrial gene) and molecular clock analysis to divergence, as well...

    First tortoises/yellow-footed tortoises in captivity

My friend and I are currently writing up a report on gigantism in yellow-footed tortoises, and we are finding some very interesting things! However, we are a little stuck right now, and we think the forum could really help us out. As part of our writeup, we are trying to give an overview of the...

    Indoor Enclosure Ideas Anyone?

Be careful making ramps, and be sure if you do decide to level your enclosure that your tortoise cannot climb or fall off the side of the ramp. This can be a serious flipping hazard, especially if a basking bulb is nearby.

    Melanochelys tricarinata

That is awesome that you keep this species! Besides some of the croc conservation centers in India (that have now become croc x turtle centers) and a few of the Turtle Survival centers in India, I’ve never seen this species in captive collections! Would you mind giving a little overview of...

    Questions- possible new leopard owner

Also, here’s a link to the leopard tortoise section of the forum. Hopefully this helps; https://www.tortoiseforum.org/forums/leopard-tortoises.87/ But I agree with everyone else that has replied thus far, that a smaller, more cold tolerant species (any of the five Testudo; subspecies specific)...

    Questions- possible new leopard owner

Hey @MIReptilian It’s awesome you’re doing so much research before jumping into caring for a tortoise! You’ve got some great questions! With the outdoor shed vs. basement argument, I think the main issue is in temperature confidence, meaning that in a shed dedicated to keeping reptiles, the...
