Well I rehomed my tort to someone better capable with more space. I had him three weeks thinking that because others told me my cage was big enough for winter that he would be fine. But I don't have any room to expand inside my home with my three kids...so better off for him to have a better...
Wow. I initially got on this site for helpful tips and sharing photos and advice...now I've decided it's probably not for me. It's not like I have him in a ten gallon tank like most people do. But apparently I'm a bad pet owner. You can delete me from the site, I don't think I will ever feel...
Www.backwaterreptiles.com is pretty great! I got my tort from there and he has the prettiest shell and is heavy and healthy! They shipped him in 10 degree weather here and he was nice and warm in his box when he arrived :) they have the cheapest online prices too.

This is a great idea also. I had mine in one of these as a temporary home until my cage came and it worked good enough that I almost considered sending the cage back (only reason I didn't is again, because of my kids/in home daycare) these work awesome and are easy to clean :)
Keep looking at Walmart, they may have a cheaper one. Just be sure you don't get one with a wire floor. As long as it has the deep plastic floor that's fine and they may have another one same size for cheaper

Maybe check eBay as well :) and amazon
I think the more you handle them the more they open up to you. Mine doesn't hide in his shell when I pick him up anymore unless I accidentally sneak up on him. He also eats from my hand occasionally. The more handling you can give your tort the better :)
The bookshelf idea is a great alternative if the cage is too much money. I had to get the cage because I have curious toddlers :) it keeps him safe from their rough hands :) but bookshelves work great from what I have heard, but I have also heard of issues with them rotting because of the...
