Male?

Was told he is a male...wanting to double check... His tail is fairly long, usually tucked into his shell off to the side.

That's why I feel confused too :/ he has signs of both! So I'm not sure. I will try to get a better photo this evening

I say female.

That "spur" is on the tip BUT that tail is less than half the length of my male's tail! My male has a super long slit opening compared to yours.

What size is this russian? My male is a little over 5" and I see a HUGE difference between ours. Unless yours is significantly smaller than mine, I'd say you have a girl.

He measures 1 1/4 inches from the top of his shell to the bottom, when I set him on top of a measuring sheet

It may still be a little too smnall to tell, but I'd say female.

Females can have a spur. Its just more common and more pronounced in males.

It looks female to me, but you could have a young male there. I'd wait another 6-12 months and check again.
