Also, @deadheadvet or anyone else that may know,how is a tortoise tested for it? Is it a blood test? Can a cytology be done of nasal discharge/mucous? Or a culture? Fluid analysis?
For a smaller tortoise I would remove the spines. I recommend wearing thick gloves when handling cactus. Not only are there the larger visible spines but tiny ones that WILL get in your fingers and annoy you for days.
My larger Sulcatas don't seem to mind the spines at all though. You can dice...
