Russian on hunger strike and eating substrate??

I use a 100 watt ZooMed Powersun for UVB, and it's around a foot above ground. As for calcium, I ran out of it ~3 weeks ago and forgot to restock :( I'll get some now. I am curious, though, why would he start eating his substrate because of a lack of calcium? I used to not give my tortoise...

Russian on hunger strike and eating substrate??

Hello! Good news-- I stopped feeding my Russian tortoise romaine (for the most part-- he gets it as a treat instead of it being a staple for his diet) and started putting more greens (dandelion, collard, mustard) into his diet and I put in some spring mix as well. I've tried slowly phasing out...

I have neglected my Russian. Please help me change.

Really?! :( I mean, my parents are starting to realize that Sneem wasn't in the best conditions, I might not need to consult a vet...

I have neglected my Russian. Please help me change.

He's going to the vet just to get a general check-up, I don't know if I'm being paranoid or not but I REALLY want to make sure my tort's healthy. I also think my parents would benefit from hearing what a professional has to say in-person...they're pretty iffy about the whole "online" thing.

I have neglected my Russian. Please help me change.

I didn't know if anybody wanted an update, but Sneem is doing very well! He's been getting 30-minute weekly soaks, getting introduced to new foods (although he doesn't quite like them yet lol), has an enclosure upgrade coming soon, and I'm scheduling a visit to the vet. Thank you all for your...

How bad is uncleaned poop in an enclosure?

As much as I try to spot clean my Russian tortoise's enclosure, I can miss some poop from time to time. Sometimes, I won't realize how dirty my tortoise's food slate is and realize it's covered in dried poop and urates weeks after the last time I cleaned it :( (thankfully, this hasn't happened...

    Parents and Tortoise Care

Thank you! Should this change be fine forever, or just until the larger enclosure is built? I’m guessing it’s the latter part of that question, but just making sure.

Here is the enclosure. If you want the specific dimensions, I’m pretty sure it is in this post: https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/i-have-neglected-my-russian-please-help-me-change.219622/

    Parents and Tortoise Care

In a couple years’ time, I do have plans for going to college. I don’t know if my parents would be able to care for him. Of course, he would be getting fed and soaked just fine, but I don’t know how things would be in terms of cleaning the enclosure. My dad cleaned the enclosure for the first 3...

    Parents and Tortoise Care

I actually spoke to my dad a little after I posted this. He said that if I really want to, we could build something in my bedroom (I did the measurements and there’s enough room for a decent enclosure). However, my dad, who will most likely be the only one helping me, is very busy with work and...

    Parents and Tortoise Care

Hello, As I’ve learnt more and more about tortoise care, I have realized that I haven’t been giving my tortoise the best life. If you would like to know more about my tortoise’s living conditions, here they are...

    Russian tortoise eating oddly

My tortoise is an adult. His enclosure is...embarrassing. I'm working towards a larger 4x8 enclosure in my bedroom, but I haven't had the time to have a proper conversation with my parents about it. It's posted here, and I actually think you replied to it...

    Russian tortoise eating oddly

Hello, recently my Russian tortoise has only been eating under his basking light. His basking light is 90-100 degrees F, and it is 73 degrees everywhere else. Is it too cold for him? Also, I realized I might have been feeding him incorrectly. I would place a pile of food the size of his shell...
