Those boxes with the heaters are great night boxes, not just for snow. You need that insulation to block out heat in summer and the heater is on a thermostat so you can set the temp for winter, snow or not

That's actually the proper way to do a French drain.
When I do them i leave the sand about 4" or so lower than your ground so I have room to put soil and grass back down.
