My Kind Of Sign (Warning: Politically Controversial)

Totally agree--Dr. Todd. And if it was really soooooo bad---I don't think we would still have thousands trying to knock the door down----trying to get in!

Uric Acid, What It Is, How It's Formed and What Happens If It Accumulates In The Body

I just wanted to add 1 slight correction. The bladder--intestines--and reproductive organs are 3 separate systems. They do not open in to each other--but rather in to the cloaca. Think of the cloaca as a 3-way valve. All comes out 1 opening---but there are 3 separate origins, each with their own...

    ZooMed Natural Grassland Tortoise food

I used it as well for Mortimer. Just be sure to read the lable to be sure your getting the one for SULCATA. The other has stuff that Sulcatas shouldn't eat on a regular basis.

    Military mom asking for prayers.

My son has told me they would enjoy ANYTHING- that doesn't look like--taste like--or smell like an MRE. There is a huge "mice"population[it's pretty cold-especially at night] so just please put food items in zip-lock bags. They don't get to shower, often[and then it is cold water] so "unsented"...

o.m.g. a positive about pet co!

Petco/petsmart doesn't sell tortoises where I am in NJ---but I would take the time to let the "manager" know that I noticed the difference in the care the animals were given. Positive reinforcement is always the best way to to keep things "better".

    I'm here to stay

Katerina, I think not only is the "long talk" with your parents a very important aspect of getting another tortoise---establishing a relationship with a VET, is as important. Your family includes other animals. While cats and "resuced Greyhounds" may not be as "exotic" as a tortoise and a Vet's...

    Help!

Rye is Beautiful! I'm so glad you were able to get him seen--quickly. Give him a little x-tra TLC while he is on medication and be sure to keep an eye on your other Babe. Altough they were together in the pet store--they should be "looked" at as 2 separate animals. The other may not get the same...

    "Hibernating" tortoises that don't hibernate

Agreed--and with that--they are eating less and conserving whatever resources they have--until they "come-up" to replenish.

    Military mom asking for prayers.

Hey Missy---Both of your "kids" as well as YOU are on my BIG Prayer list. My son, Ron, has been in Afghanistan, for a little over a month now[Marines--Artillary]. I find myself reading more posts than normal--just to keep my mind occupied. When I send a box--it has to have enough for 65 guys to...

    "Hibernating" tortoises that don't hibernate

Can a pet rat survive in the wild? Though possible, it's highly unlikely. Pet rats know what they know based on past experiences (like us!). If a rat doesn't know what it's like outside, doesn't know the difference between friend and foe, doesn't know how to protect himself from cold, from...

    CALICHE

What if the "coolness" down below was supposed to be there[to get out of the sun] and isn't there a thing about the "frost level" of ground temps that would compensate for the deepth of the burrow? Just thinking out loud.

    "Hibernating" tortoises that don't hibernate

Estivation for Sulcata's,IMO,is what I think we don't provide for our captives. It is a time[naturally occuring cycle] that they have in the wild and their "bodies" are designed to accommodate what the "winter season" presents in their region---drier[no rain]---food scarsity[no rain-no plant...

    Daisy Lou + Vet + Xray = :(

IMHO----there are 2 very large densities[stones] in the lower 1/2 of the abdominal cavity--that could possibly be as "big" as the stone that was previously passed. My concern would be the density that is higher-up---that appears to be "square-shaped". That,to me, looks like some kind of foreign...

    Bruising

If you don't see any "puffiness" anywhere else[head--neck] I would just continue to hydrate[especially because of the med's] and keep an eye on it. Maybe a small piece of substrate "rubbed her the wrong way" after a soak when the skin was more pliable---and caused a weak spot. JMO

    I was wondering...

I seem to remember from biology class[a long time ago] that since MOST reptiles hatch long after the "mom" has layed her eggs---and the "hatchlings" are born already complete [meaning they can thrive without "parental care"] their only task is "survival". I would take this to mean--that it is in...

    Happy Thanksgiving--a little early!

I just wanted to wish ALL a "Happy Thanksgiving". I wanted to offer my Thanks to the "Forum". My son is a Marine[now in Afghanistan] and this is his most favorite holiday. It will be the first he has missed in 24 years. He has been gone 1 month[only 6 1/2 to go]. During the "sadder" times for...
