So the 120 temperature I recorded is at carapace level; I taped a digital thermometer to his shell to get a better idea of what temps he is experienciing. He has started to use his heating pad; I just got the controller and everything going and I am trying to get the pad set just right
I have been tweaking with my sulcata barn and his basking daylight temperature is about 120 degrees. Is this too high? I currently have a 250 watt light in there.
At night time, I have a 250 watt red light. I *just* put in a stanfield heat matt and would like to discontinue the night lamp...
Can you give me some info on the oil heater you use? What brand? Are they really a low fire risk?
I currently keep my tortoise in a rubbermaid storage shed like the one you have pictured but I would like to build him something a bit nicer and yours looks fairly simple to duplicate. Thanks for...
I got a sulcata tortoise a few months ago and I just recently got a stanfield heat mat to heat his rubbermaid storage shed. I plugged it in last night and the pad stayed fairly warm, but is underbelly heat sufficient? How to you keep track of the temperature? I was using a thermometer with a...
He is kept outside. He was living with someone else for a year and just came to me a few days ago. They said he was about 55 pounds when they got him, and I weighed him yesterday and he was 57.
I have been feeding him 1 bell pepper and 1 cactus pad a day plus bunch of watercress/collard...
So someone said my sulcata looked like he needed a soak. I put in a water hole thing for him which he has not used at all. So, should I soak him forcibly? I tried putting him IN his water hole and he hated it and promptly crawled away.
So should I put him in a tub with warm water (like 70...
I am thinking about buying a stanfield mat to heat my tortoises house. I currently have a whole bunch of hay in there for him to bury himself in. Do tortoises NEED hay to bury in? Or is it safer to just have the pad without bedding?
He is a sulcata
I have a 60 pound male sulcata I rescued from an animal shelter; he was a stray. I had found a home for him, but after a year they returned him and he is currently living with me and I would like to find a more suitable PERMANENT home for him but will keep him as long as it takes to do so...
He doesn't have a water dish and apperently hasn't for the past year. He doesn't ever go in to soak. He does eat hay, so is grass hay the best stuff to give him?
What makes a good water dish? We have a plastic kiddie pool we might sort of bury so he can crawl in it.
We weren't feeding...
I am looking at the Herpstat thermostats and the Helix DBS 1000.
I just want something to maintain my tortoises shed at the right temperature, but not *too* high as I want it to be fairly energy efficient.
Do these fancy thermostats work well, or am I better off just buying a cheap...
Ok, so he is all set up in our yard and HOPEFULLY will not destroy things.
We are going to take him to the vet for a check up.
In the mean time, just *how much* should he eat? He never stops eating or gets to a full point. Is there a quantity of food he should get?
Also.....is it...
Hello,
I am new and this is my first post! Tomorrow I am picking up a ~60# sulcata. I am finding that there isn't really a whole lot of information about keeping large sulcatas. Most information I've found is just about general tortoises who live in small terrariums :)
Does anyone out...
