Hey guys, Gooch is back ;). This time, I have built an enclosure for my skink(yes, I know this is a tortoise forum, but the cage I built for him is basically the same as the one I built for my tortoise). I sealed it with water based polyurethane, and I am waiting for it to off gas or something...
Hi guys, Gooch is back again. I am building an enclosure for my leopard gecko, and because you guys know alot about wood, I thought I would ask you. I don't have any more water based polyurethane to coat the wood, but is there any wood that would be at like Home Depot to build my enclosure with...
Wow, thanks for all the nice comments I really appreciate them. I haven't been on Tortoise Forum in a long time..... Once again, thank you all for your nice comments!
Hi guys, I finished my russian's tortoise table, so now it is time to add some life, color, green, plants, or whatever you want to call them. I already have Kale/Lettuce growing in one pot and 2 spider plants growing in another pot. do you guys have any ideas for different plants or how to add...
Thanks @Markw84 Will just letting the enclosure sit there for an extra day have the same effect as having all the substrate and stuff in there for a day?
Thanks for the advice guys. @Yvonne G The screens that I used are metal, so they won't sag as much. And yes, i have caught my cat just chilling on the screens staring at my tortoise :P @Markw84 I think I have some of that hardware cloth. Will i have to put some more water based polyurethane on...
Hello guys, I just saw a post on Facebook saying that their russian tortoise got attacked by his cat because it jumped into his open topped table. As some of you may know, I just built a new tortoise table, and now I really want to buy or make some screen tops for it. I have 2 screen lids that...
@Yvonne G It is all an open topped table, but I am in search of screen lids for a 20 gallon aquarium so I can line those up in a row on top of the table so it can allow air flow and my evil cat can't get in there.
@Markw84 Sorry to bother you again but I put the heat lamp on the table for a few hours and when I came back, It wasnt nearly as strong as it was before. Heck, I could barely smell the polyurethane. Do you think it is safe for me to put my tort in there now? Sorry for being so clueless on this...
Hi guys, just waiting for my new tortoise table to off gas. I read somewhere that shining a heat lamp on the table will speed up the curing process. Is this true?
Yes it feels dry. I used water based poly. It is almost hard to tell if the smell is still there because just have a fan on it and the smell is spread out through the house. It is open topped. When I actually put my nose on the table and I smell it, it doesn't smell bad at all.
ANOTHER UPDATE: I moved the table out of my room into the hallway so it is warmer and better air circulation. Please let me know when I should put my tortoise in there. It is dry to the touch now.
UPDATE: The table is dry to the touch and the fumes in my room have gone down quite a bit, but they are still there. Should I play it safe and wait until thursday or friday or later to put my tortoise in there? Thanks for all your help guys. @Markw84 @stevenf625 @Yvonne G @Stuart S. sorry if I...
@Markw84 Sorry to bug you again. Would my enclosure just not be safe for my tort because of the fumes or is it that the soil will stick to the wood? I am thinking of putting down the plastic shower liner
