    Need opinions on shell please

This is my Sulcata Tortoise named Kiwi, I got her as a rescue. The first photo is when I got her and the rest of the photos are from today. She had a small crack and some scutes that were kind of concave looking. I cleaned and disinfected her and put vet recommended resin adhesive on her crack...

Help is this shellrot? My Redfoot losing plastron scutes

I was giving my 3 yr old redfoot a bath and I noticed one of her plastron scutes had fallen off. I was kind of horrified by that but after a lot of research I started immediately treating her with Beta iodine and a topical skin cream. I also used Chlorhexidine diluted to clean the area scrubbing...

Worried!!! My Sulcata scutes lifting off

Hi… upset parent speaking and desperately needing advice. My Sulcata Grenade is 10 years old and 22kg. Been healthy and active with good appetite. Recently I find two of his top scutes are seemingly loosening and lifting off. I’ve read old threads and all seemed to suggest either too...

Reading into the shells. What can we learn from a hatchling's shell condition?

OK so here are some pics of my Aldabra hatchlings which I've owned for about a month. All three seem to be doing just fine and I have no health concerns to report at the moment. What I'd like to know is what, if anything, we are able to discern by examining the shells of our growing turtoises...

    Sunken in scute

Hi! I just noticed my 8 month old Greek tortoise has these 2 “sunken” in scutes on his shell. Is this something to be worried about or is this part of the normal growth? Thanks! and yes, husbandry is perfect. He has a 4X6 enclosure.. humidity at 75% (for winter times). Cool spot at 80 degrees...

    Scute rubbed away

Hey there! Whilst bathing my boy today I noticed one little part above his leg was a lighter cream colour than the rest. Out of curiosity I rubbed the other side thinking it may be a build up of dirt. Upon researching, I feel like this may have been keratin. I'm now questioning if this might...

    Scute falling off adult Sulcata

I took in two males at the beginning of this year. They came with damage to their shells. I’m only assuming due to low heat lamps. one main top scute is about to fall off. Now I know when it happens it happens. But I had a question as to if there is anything I can apply to the exposed “dead”...

Very Abnormal Shelled Sulcata Hatchling- First Post

For as long as I can remember I’ve liked turtles and tortoises, and as a kid owned two red eared sliders. Now as a teenager I have two sulcata hatchlings, one with a very abnormal scute count, anus, and tail named uzi, and one completely healthy named panzer. Uzi has a hard time pooping usually...

    Extra scute questions

I noticed a extra scute on the rear end of my tort. Is this just cosmetic or could it lead to problems in the future since it’s located above his hind leg? I wasn’t made aware of this when ordering him but I don’t mind, I just want to make sure it won’t be a issue in the future. I was also...

    DRYING SCUTE LAYERS

Haven’t noticed in the last 2 weeks but it seems like a few layers of his scute are drying out.. Soaking 2-3 times a week. If no soak then at least a spray down with hose or mister. The top of his head seems to be slightly peeling, I assume it’s due to growth.
