It is, but very common. What type of tortoise? After about a month from getting my sully. I noticed a blackening around his mouth. I called the person who I bought it from because I was freaking out. I was thinking all kinds of bad things. Mouth rot etc. He asked me to send him a photo. He called me back and said I had a poo eater. Sure enough I started watching him like a hawk. Opo was a poo eater. ?hes 2..5 and I don’t think he would eat he’s own poo that’s Horrendous surely

Since being on the forum. I have seen it and discussed it. It is not uncommon.
I believe rabbits also recycle their poop for maximum nutrition. It's my understanding that they eat poop for 2 reasons.
1) Because there is still some nutrition remaining in it. Torts are able to extract that nutrition and use it.
2) Because it is a way to repopulate their guts with good bacteria.
3) They also poop in their burrows to help increase the humidity in them.
This is what I've read. If anyone knows differently, please enlighten me!![]()

Thank you but if he is eating poo will he get sick thanks ??Ever notice how your cutting knife and cutting board get darkened with use? That's oxidation from the juices in the veggies you're chopping. Same thing is happening to the tortoise's mouth. It's just darkening from the foods he's eating, whether it be recycling poop or eating fresh greens. It's nothing to be concerned about.
Don't worry, just be diligent on cleaning up. Opo has a routine so I generally know when he poops. It won't make him sick but other animals poop could. Opo grew out of eating his poop. He hates it now. If he poops in his soaking. He wants out fast.Thank you but if he is eating poo will he get sick thanks ??
