I put my two CDTs in a plastic wading pool most days (with hides) to get some sunshine. They are small so it is also for exercise. I am working on a large outside pen. I just need more cinder block, the plants to take root and the dirt to dry out. It should be good to go in a month. Anyway I don't have a substrate in the pool because of rain and I like to hose in out every day. Recently I got to thinking about when the vet told me not to feed my dogs out of plastic bowls because they could develope a plastic alergy. Could the same aply to my torts?

Thoughts please.

Thanks!

Well after 50 years of testing Joe hasn't developed an allergy to plastic. (He prefers to attempt to mate with it :D)

Their carapace has no nerve endings, so there's no allergic reaction there. Any allergies would be on exposed skin such as the head, legs and tail.

You are perfectly OK with plastic.

I haven't heard this about dogs either. Millions (Billions?) of them across the world are fed from plastic bowls without ill effect... and humans manage to use plastic too.

Thanks. I was starting to panic about it. I have had a couple vets tell me that, even though my plastic food dish was clearly made for dogs the vet told me to get rid of it. She was a moble vet and saw the bowl I had for food. She did not try to sell me a bowl just said my dog could develople blisters around his mouth.
I can't wait for the new pen to be done. They will have so much room to roam and stuff to explore!

Probably referring to the BPA in some plastics. This can be a bad thing, but people are catching on and there are a lot of pet bowls being made with BPA free plastic.

My cousin and I both worked for two different vets for many years. Never heard of a dog or cat or any animal becoming allergic to plastic. Sounds very fishy to me.

i have heard that about plastic bowls too...
as for the torts.. no substrate would be a bit slippery and hard for them to get traction.. what about using at least a towel?
