We recently changed from terrarium liner to coco coir and got the humidity up from 30% to 70-75%. After doing this our tortoises head and legs seem to be darker? Her head was a light tan and now it's brown and no, she isn't just dirty unless the coco stains them! Is this normal? Any ideas? Here's a currant pic

It does appear to be stained, but I use coir and lots of it, my tort has many inchs thick coir in his enclosure, never does it darken him, wonder if its the brand u got, my coir is made by all living things

I don't know if it's the coir, this happened to my hatchling and he was outside 24/7 living on plain dirt..

I don't know as far as the substrate is concerned, but I read on another post from this forum that they get darker when they're getting a lot of sun/UVB...so that's good!

If the substrate is wet, it stains more.. but I do recommend long soaks that way it rubs off.

Dirty. Mine does this too, luckily he doesn't mind a little scrub with a soft bristle brush. It doesn't get it all off but makes a clean spot here and there.

I had this happen once when I used a new package of coco coir. The substrate was really wet and my tort dug into a corner and buried his head. With daily soaks the stain went away after a few days and has not returned.
