Well, for those who have logic, I will say this:

I have read threads on here that are a few years old where the same people were saying cfl's were bad. The people then who knew they were safe challenged these same people to produce a single bulb that put out anything dangerous. And now, a few years later, they never were able to. Not a single one. None. So, despite the claims and plenty of time, they still came up empty. Just like Sasquatch hunters and Nessie photographers.

And this has been explained many times too. Most people throw the bulbs away or return them for a refund. This has been pursued many times and no one has followed through. This does not mean there isn't a problem. It means that we haven't had a bulb to test or a person with the facilities and willingness to test it.

Thanks for your reply. I feel abit uneasy now. As a first time tort owner I only want the best for him. I came to this forum to learn, share & be part of a good community. However I feel now that if something is not to someone's liking & the advice given you start to doubt yourself & researching & internet sources all conflicting you kinda go with what's been advised. Could of saved some pennies on the light situation now. That could of gone to other things. Shame.

No Steve. You were advised correctly. This one guy just believes that if he didn't see a problem first hand, it couldn't possibly exist. Many of us have seen this issue in person first hand, to include veterinarians and long term experienced tortoise keepers.

You should see what happens when I mention heat mats. I use those too and if you believed the opinions of some, all my torts and turtles should be dead :)
Same issue. If Brian didn't see it himself first hand, it couldn't possibly exist. Never mind decades of reptiles being burned by these devices… Everyone else is just crazy and can't possibly know anything that Brian doesn't know.

There is a possibility from a lot of anecdotal evidence provided by many members of this forum that some of these coiled bulbs may sometimes cause eye injury and that they may not provide enough UVB within the necessary range.
Other alternatives are available.
Why take the risk with your tortoise ?

You've both stated your sides to this issue, that's enough.

Some people use the bulbs just fine and see no harm done to their tortoises.

Some people have baby tortoises with burned eyes from using these bulbs.

Now it's up to the folks reading this thread to make their own decision whether to use the bulbs or not.

End of story!
