[Pulls up a small soapbox... Awkwardly limbs on top...]

I really appreciate the work that people like Christy and so many of our own members go through to try to help injured, neglected, abandoned, or whatever animals. So many of the cases, like this one, are heartbreaking and they often offer little chance of a really 'happy' ending. Besides the emotional toll, there are also the real costs and hard work involved in doing it.

A round of psychic applause, please, for the people who take on these challenges!

At the same time, I want to take a moment to remind others that this is not for everyone. I have gotten a lot of calls over the years from people who have made it their responsibility to take on cases like this when they really have no clue what they are in for. Moms whose kids bring home an injured bird, the couple that 'rescued' a turtle several states away because it was on the road, the kind heart that bought the sick-looking turtle from the pet shop thinking they could help it...

I appreciate the heart that people have, but am really, really glad when cases like this are in the hands of people who are ready and capable of helping.

[Gets off soapbox, puts it away neatly for next time...]

You're absolutely right Mark. I got a call yesterday from someone who had a RES whose two hind legs were bitten off. She heard that I had turtles and wanted to know if I would take her. I wouldn't know where to begin to help this turtle. I gave her a number to call and hopefully she will follow through with that. The time and dedication that goes into these animals, just to rehabilitate them, is phenomenal. I'm sure Maggie and Yvonne and some other's on this forum can arrest to that. I know that Christy is one of those people just from the progress that Booboo has had.

That's so depressing to see. It's a relief that he's in good hands now. Poor guy.. he can barely walk. I hope he'll recover.
