Of course you make meat balls out of it... You're from Staten Island!!! I have relatives in S.I. & I think they put meat balls in their cereal in the morning!!! :):):):)

Here's something I do for the Winter. I put in a food processor, carrots, plantain, dandelion, grape leaves, Rose of Sharon leaves, and escarole, and a sweet potato, dry reptomin, dry mazuri and 1 raw egg, with the shell. I make balls, like small meat balls, and put them on a tray, and freeze them. When they are frozen, I take the balls and put them in a zip lock bag and put them in the freezer. In the morning I'll take out a ball and defrost it. When it's defrosted I add some ground venison. I will be doing this in a few weeks, while I still have some of these greens. My box turtles go crazy over this and I even give it to Pio and Solo, (my Cherry Head's) I do this in the Summer too, I just don't freeze it.

Italian style, of course!! :D

Quick question... This is my 1st winter as a tortoise owner. Does anyone know if dandelions and broadleaf plantains wither & die during the winter or do they live on?

im on the east coast as well in pa. they die off in the winter. but most grocery stores sell them. giant, weis. they have them. also endive, and escrole, mustard greens, n kale they all have them in stock... if you can't find the dandelions there try a farmers market... good luck if you have any ? just ask...

You'd think dandelions & most other weeds could live out here on the edge of West Texas, but they die here too. It does get below freezing in winter, it just doesn't last long & not much snow or ice to speak of. We do have what we call winter rye grass & other weeds that will suffice, provided we start getting some rain! My dandelions only started growing in Aug. this yr. due to lack of rain & didn't get very many leaves on them before they seeded out. I've picked the devil outta' them & saved some seeds.

I have already started growing some seeds under florescent lighting & will get more seed ordered shortly. I have a dehydrator I use for raw pumpkin seeds for myself & I tried drying some turnip greens, they didn't turn out like I'd hoped. I will try again, I don't think I dried them long enough. I haven't seen any dandelion greens for sale around this area in stores, I researched just the other day online to see if I could order any, but I found seeds, no greens.

Reptomin is an aquatic turtle food. I see you have Hermann's and Leopard tortoises? Both Reptomin and raw egg would not be good for yours. Much too high in animal protein for your herbivores. Terry has Redfoot tortoises and Box turtles--both omnivores that need the protein. That's the difference here... While her meat ball is fantastic for omnivorous turtles and tortoises, it would be nutritional disaster to an herbivore like your Hermann's or Leopards, especially if used as a staple.

If you skip the reptomin, raw egg, and venison, and find good, herbivore-friendly alternatives (i.e. ZooMed Grassland in place of Reptomin, calcium/vitamins in place of the egg shell, fresh greens in place of the venison), I'm willing to bet Terry's meatball can be adapted to be a fantastic wintertime food for herbivores.

I live near Angi. Our weeds are just growing in. I have a nice mallow patch growing right now, but only because I am watering it regularly. We won't really get our good weeds until it starts raining. Winter is the best greens growing season in San Diego, including weeds.
