Right now i have my tort in a 54 gallon Rubbermaid container, with coconut husk bark, a half like hiding spot, a piece of red slate under the basking lamp, and a fake vine decoration. whats something i could add to make Igore more comfortable, and add a little something to his plain looking home

Rocks, plants in pots partially submerged in the dirt, a small broken plant pot on it's side, a large branch...those are all the ideas I have...

HI Cody! I am a newbie RT owner as well. Lot's of people keep referring me to this site: http://russiantortoise.org/ - it has a specific link for edible plants and toxic plants. Not sure if you were aware of that site or not.... :) It has quite the extensive list for you to peruse and choose what you want to grow.

Also at www.carolinapetsupply.com they have a Russian Tortoise seed mix... (I'm going to try and grow that when it gets warmer here) Good Luck! :)

If it's just one tortoise in the enclosure, there is no real need for visual barriers and keep in mind that everything you place on the ground that the tortoise can't easily climb over or under is taking away from it's floorspace-tortoises are terrestrial, the more ground the better. Most decoration in a tortoise enclosure is for the benefit of the owner, not the tortoise. Most things edible will be eaten very quickly unless it's out of reach.
Some of the best "furniture" for Russian tortoises is simply large, low sloping rocks that they can easily climb without overturning and sturdy, solid tunnels made of wood, or clay pipe. Any light weight materials get moved around too easily.
Keep in mind when designing an enclosure for a Russian tortoise that you essentially have a four legged bulldozer to contend with!

Mine do appear to like having some large flat rocks hear their basking tile. They often perch themselves at an angle to catch more 'rays'.
I would put something like a small log partially submerged in the soil. Then they have to climb a bit when they move around.

whatever you are adding for looks.. you are doing for yourself... the tort doesnt really care.. so do what you like.
fake plants, real plants, like pansies or other edibles...
just be careful not to put something that the tort will climb up on and be able to climb out.
