Does any one know if crown vetch (Securigera varia) is safe to feed? they contain chemicals called nitroglycosides. It can be toxic to horses. It is a legume, member of the pea family and is easy to grow. There is nothing about it on the tortoise table site. any knowledge would be appreciated.

The literature says that Crown vetch is toxic to mammals, however, I had it planted on purpose in my cow pasture and it was a good pasture feed, but after it has frozen (cold nights, etc) it develops a toxic fungus/mold.

Thank you for the info. I might plant a small amount, but I will mow off to ground level at first frost.
