I'm building an outside oasis for our torts. It's a very large uneven area. I need to fill it in with dirt after we are done adding the blocks. Since I need a lot of dirt I would like to know where and what I would get to fill in the area.
It's okay if it's uneven, the torts won't mind, probably would like it better then just a boring flag surface. If you need to fill it in, I would use clean chemical free black dirt and throw some seed into it, grass and weeds, like clover, dandelion and any others you can find.
You should be able to buy topsoil (or any type of dirt) by the yard from a landscape supplier or nursery.
Or you could put a wanted ad on Craigslist for 'clean fill', though it may be more work than its worth getting legitimately clean fill. People have different ideas of what it means.
There's no universal definition to "topsoil", so you'd have to check it before hand. Straight up topsoil may have small rocks, twigs etc. But you can get different grades, with some being screened for rocks and such. But yes, I think topsoil is about as good as it gets, maybe with compost mixed in if you plan on growing plants as well.
I used both clean fill and top soil. The 2500 square feet I used for a pen was bare to start with. The clean fill came from a neighbor. It introduced a ton of weeds that had been previously eradicated from my yard. That was a good thing because it gave a much needed variety to my tortoises diet. The top soil I got from a local landscape supply. A place that sells soil by the pickup load.
