Good morning all, I would like to introduce myself ...My Name is W Kevn Horton I am 58 years old and I live in Tehachapi Ca. I am so glad I ran across this form. I am and have been in love with these guys from the time my father brought our first one home when I was 5-6. I remember having at least one tortoise running around our yard my whole life. we grew up in Thousand Oaks ca. and there was a place called Jungleland wild animal park but it went out of business in the early 60's and when it did my father was a bidder on a pair of 200lb. Galopacous but did not win and I remember seeing just how disappointed he was. ( sorry I digress) I have just adopted a young female of approx 155.lbs, and this week we are setting up a compound and heated she-shed to keep her warm and toasty, I have been on you-tube and have been watching everything I can to insure she will be safe and healthy long past my life span, so if there is any advise you all would like to impart upon me Please let me know as the health and well-being of my new lady is the most important part. I am looking forward to learning from you all.
Have a slow but great Day.

Hi Kevn, and welcome!

It's very important to make sure your new lady has calcium-rich foods. Those big tortoises can become calcium deficient very quickly, then you have problems with weak legs, etc.

Is your new lady a galapagos or an Aldabran?

A lot of the info on Youtube is old or wrong. It's good to look at all the info you can find, then pick and choose what works for you and your tortoise. I'd love to see pictures of the new girl.

Hi Kevn. Wow... you adopted a galapagos? I was originally going to adopt a sulcata but was afraid it would eat me out of house and home. I can only imagine with a galapagos! lol

Best of luck with with your new family member.

In California as long as you have irrigation, you can grow enough to feed one sulcata in a normal yard easily. I still have to mow my lawn! I don't spend anything on feeding my sulcata.
