Jethra is sooo picky, man. Now she won't eat on any flat surfaces. If we take her cuddlebone out she'll nibble on it on the carpet but only to break pieces off and eat them off the carpet. She also won't eat on a plate, a tupperware top, or a piece of plexi glass. Any time we put her on a flat smooth surface she won't eat, she instead sits on it and kicks it off to eat it off the carpet and/or will eat it immediately when we put it on the carpet.

Do you have your tort in its own enclosure and not on the floor roaming the house? i dont think torts should be on carpet at all. many hidden things in carpet that can cause impaction. You need to make a nice habitat for him, and buy a slate tile from homedepot for feeding on.They are really rough surface and great from getting traction when feeding, which maybe why your tort wont eat on a slippery smooth surace and only on carpet. please give us a decription on how you are keeping your tort.

She got her enclosure, but she doesn't roam much there and looks out at us from a corner so we take her out and let her roam. It's raining out because of some hurricane or something so we just let her walk around in the livingroom today.

I wonder if slate would work.... she doesn't seem to like the flat surfaces and we're worried to feed her on the coir because we don't want her to eat it too.. xDD

i use slate...its hase chips and nitches so its not flat brill for wareing down an overgrown beak!

Go to your nearest hardware mega store (Home Depot or Lowe's) and buy a suitably-sized piece of flagstone (basically, a flattish piece of limestone) out in the Gardening area...not only will it help keep Jethra's nails and beak trimmed, but any limestone dust she scrapes off is good, healthy calcium.

Likely between $1 - $5.

Larger pieces make nice caves for your tort to sleep in when the sun is too hot and/or at night...

Wow those rocks are awesome to build little caves and we'll try it out for feeding her cause we want her nails nice and trim also thanks guys!
