Hi tortoise friends! I am new here but not new to owning chelonians. I current have a 15 yr old sulcata. He is very small for his age at 10# but vets say he is healthy....the past month or so I've noticed that some times he will just start breathing loudly. It's not gargly, there's no discharge. Just a loud hissing repeatedly. Then it just stops. It usually happens when he is still and not when he has been actively cruising. It's more of a whistling sound and it's not with every breath. He is eating/pooping/peeing, etc just fine. We recently moved so I don't have a vet yet for him. Any thoughts? I've heard they are noisy breathers when they get bigger but just wondering if this is normal louder breathing or something to be concerned about.

Shine a very bright light on his face and see if you can see anything in his nostrils. He may have a bit of food or grass or some such stuck in there.
