What a beautiful tortoise!
I want to add myself to the list of those thoroughly appalled by the treatment this little treasure suffered before you rescued him/her.
I use a soil/children's playsand 50/50 mix for my Mediterranean torties and it works very well. I keep it moist, but not soaking wet, and they love to dig and bury into it. I was told it's good for them to bury in moist soil. Mine all love it.
